Curious. This didn't work for me. However, having followed those steps I
then decided to add the nvidia driver to initrd. Now it works just fine.
I backed up the old initrd first just in case, then ran:
mkinitrd -f --with=nvidia initrd-2.6.9-1.667smp.img 2.6.9-1.667smp
