FC3 udev and pilot-xfer

I'm using a Treo 90 on a clean install of FC3, with all updates. I
can't get pilot-xfer or jpilot to work.
I've tried the suggestions about 10-local.rules files without success,
and finally tried using pilot-xfer directly, as root to avoid
permissions problems.
I pressed the sync button on the Treo USB cable, and (after a brief
wait) issued the pilot-xfer command. It seems to connect, but hangs
after transferring a small file or two; the Treo says that the
connection has been lost.
[udev] 141) pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -b ~/pilot-backup

/var/log/messages shows the device disconnected:

I'd appreciate any suggestions or pointers.
Thanks,
George
