yeah. Can't disribute bninaries made from modified code. Therefore, no 
bugfixes except from UW.

Debian does (or did) get round it by distributing (patched) source.

One could build it oneself:
apt-get -b source pine

and there's a pine-tracker package to alert users of new versions.
