Gnome 2.8 file association problem

I think what you are looking for is
"~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list"
but I strongly suggest filing a bug (http://bugzilla.redhat.com)

Is "Right-click->Properties->Open With" not working for this case?

Anyway, like Rodolfo suggested, you can create (or modify) a .desktop
file to register the application as capable of handling that file.

You can also check the documentation at
http://www.freedesktop.org/software/shared-mime-info 

(don't know if the pages are currently online, freedesktop.org was
compromised recently and they were in the processes of rebuilding their
system)

and if you want to add that file type to the shared-mime-info, you can
do so by filing a bug in http://bugs.freedesktop.org (which is online
ATM).
