If you work really hard at it, say using rpm2cpio and cpio you can make it as
small as you like.
However, unless (like me) you like doing it yourself, I suggest using a
specialist product such as ipcop.
ipcom can run from flash. This may surprise you, but flash memory has a
limited lifetime (measured in writes to a particular area) and ipcop ca work
round this.
Me, I'm using Debian/Sarge on a Pentium II and shorewall.
