vmware and fedora

Vmware claims not to support Fedora, but I thought' I'd try it anyway.
 It boots from the installation CD but after the install, at the start
of the boot process I get the message:

PCI:  Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device 0000:00:07.1
...
Kernel panic - not syncing:  Attempted to kill init!

btw, I am successfully running RedHat AWS3 as well as Suse 9 (both of
which have a 2.4 kernel).

I'm running vmware 4.0 Workstation.
