The problem is - 'what you want - as default' install isn't
necessarily 'what I want' for a default install.

Personally - I like the default 'Logwatch' /other 'cron mails' to be
delivered - and you need a functional sendmail/postfix for this to
work.

Folks have been discussing more 'choices' at install time for (for eg:
extra-minimal install < 300MB, 'router install' etc..) - so far
nothing has come out of this.
