My modprobe.conf file has this and works perfectly (set up by system-
config-soundcard)

&& /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1
|| : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0

Note that this is actually 4 lines from modprobe.conf, but line wrapped
by the mailer
There is one line that does the alsactl restore and another that does
the alsactl store.
