Alsa in KDE

Hi,
    I have always had problems with Alsa and/or Kde in one way or a 
nother,I have got down to this - in /etc/rc.d/rc.local I placed

/usr/sbin/alsactl restore

and it starts sound to hear 'kde-startup.wav' while booting Kde,
then when the Kde desktop activates the 'kde-startup.wav' stops before 
completion and the mixers are then all at 'zero' requiring me to run

'alsactl restore'

before I get any sound back. Is there any way to have alsactl restore
run when the desktop activates.
