problems in activating swap

Dear All,
    I created a swap partition in fdisk wrote the filesystem and restarted. I am getting errors while activating it using swapon <partition name>

Kindly suggest what is to be done. The swap manual says swapon <partition name> will work. Also suggest any good sites for the same.
