I just built an Athlon 64 box with an Nvidia GEFORCE FX 5700 LE video
card about 3 weeks ago. I have not had the problem you report.
Everything worked AOK until I did a dist-upgrade using apt-get several
days ago. It upgraded all the X related files and X then started
crashing very frequently (just moving some windows could cause a crash)
and it crashed every day even without doing anything. I switched from
using the fc2 shipped nvidia GEFORCE FX driver to a generic VGA driver
and the problem has disappeared. You might try the generic driver until
you can find a better driver.
