up2date is not the predecessor to yum. They are entirely different and

Something as simple as this:
# rsync -av ftp://SERVER/PATH/ /local/updates/
can be run from cron once or twice a day. Then you automatically have
*all* updates for that Fedora version on one box, downloaded exactly
once. And rsync will keep that directory updated for you.
Then you either NFS-export that directory to each machine, and tell
up2date to use the "dir" option to get its updates from a local
directory, or you make that directory a yum repository (very easy) and
point all your machines to it.
The tools are all there. Should take 5-10 minutes to set the whole thing
up. I have previously posted the scripts I used to run a full Red Hat
mirror; modifying those to easily mirror one or two updates directories
(i.e. FC1/updates and FC2/updates) is trivial. See:

The friendliest (but still very secure) solution I have found is WinSCP.
It is a nice and friendly Windows program with its own installer, where
they open it up and get two directory windows side-by-side (obviously,
one local and one remote). They then merely drag-and-drop from one side
to another.
Since all transport is over SSH, I feel happy. And it *is* easy. And I
get the pleasure of explaining to people that IE is a security nightmare
and that the best way of having their data cracked, lost, or stolen is
to use it. <grin>
Good results from several of my customers so far.

All:
Just make sure the Server allows rsync. I look at the mirrors.txt file at downloads.fedora.redhat.com and look for rsync BEFORE starting. I know that mirrors.kernel.org does. Otherwise you might not be able to get the files (at best) or get a nastygram from the system administrator that states you are attempting an unauthorized action towards/against their system (at worst). In either case, you did not complete what you attempted.

yum install kernel-sourcecode (IIRC)
The source which will come down won't be for the kernel you have though
as you're not running the current FC2 kernel which is what the
sourcecode package will be for.

Should be available on the source disks, or available from download.fedora.redhat.com (and better mirror sites everywhere) in the /pub/fedora/linux/core/2/SRPMS directory. The file name is kernel.2.6.5-1.358.src.rpm.

yum install kernel-sourcecode (IIRC)
The source which will come down won't be for the kernel you have though
as you're not running the current FC2 kernel which is what the
sourcecode package will be for.
That will get the source for the current kernel, which he may/may not be running. However, I gave him the directory to get the file from. Of course, I always recommend running the latest stable kernel that does not cause problems (there are reports of 'breakage' with the latest Fedora Core 2 kernel and some processes.)
You can use yum to get other kernels and their sources.

Red Hat Linux 9 is very old now and no longer supported. I would
*really* suggest that you wait another week and install Fedora Core 3
when it is released.
Then I suggest you use a network analyzer like ethereal to figure out
what the traffic is. No amount of DNS traffic will fill a 1 Mbps pipe.
Squid does have logs, so you should be able to see whether it has a part
in the puzzle.

It's not http-based as the OP requested but I agree, I also favour this
option by far. However look at http://filezilla.sf.net, seems a bit more
attractive.

(SD/DF/...). In KDE's control panel, under information, the device
itself seems to be seen, attached to "USB UHCI Root Hub (4)"... Does
anyone know how I read media on this thing?

It's not specific to Fedora Core 2, please adapt it (e.g. install from
rpm not directly from sources or re-compile postfix source rpm)
For webmail use squirrelmail from development (or a FC3test release),
it's better than what FC2 has.
I've configured several servers with this setup for my company's
customers and it works. Use amavisd-new to interface postfix with
spamassassin/clamav. If you still need a configured server ready-to-go
and are willing to pay for it as you said, email me.
You should subscribe to web-cyradm list too, it's low traffic and
useful.
