I had this same problem a few hours ago, amazingly. This is what I did
to fix

Hit CTL-ALT-F1 to go to the first console

Login as root

Type 'telinit 3' at the prompt to get to run level 3 and stop X

CD into /tmp and delete all of the xses-$username files

Type telinit 5 to get back to run level 5 and start X

Viola
