Note that on the system that I have that contains a Riva TNT video card,
system-config-display would only create the necessary entries in the
xorg.conf file to display a maximum of 800x600 pixel resolution with a
16 bit color depth (thousands of colors). To support a higher resolution
and color depth, I needed to modify the xorg.conf file by hand. The
lines that I added after the Display subsection are:

~ SubSection "Display"
~ Viewport 0 0
~ Depth 24
~ Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
~ EndSubSection

I also changed the DefaultDepth value from 16 to 24. After making these
changes and restarting the X server, the display came up at the 1152X864
pixel resolution and I could step through the other settings using the
<CTL><ALT>+ or - keys on the numeric keypad.

Be sure that the display can handle the resolution and sync frequencies.

I think that system-config-display does not properly detect the amount
of video memory installed on this card.

If you want, I can send you a copy of the xorg.conf file that works for me.
