yum update filesystem space problems

I've finally gotten all of the dependancies worked out, and the install 
is ready to begin.

The latest problem to overcome is that I get the following errors about 
file system space:

('installing package xfig-3.2.4-3 needs 1248MB on the / filesystem', 
(9, '/', 1307799552L))

BUT, a quick check shows:

[root at anes-andre044 Sunday]# df
Filesystem           1K-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2              8254272   5288864   2546112  68% /
/dev/hda5              4127076   3069888    847544  79% /var

I have plenty of space! What's the problem?
