Followup:

Firefox people say, essentially, mozilla is a gtk app, not a qt app, so they 
use the gtk-ish system defaults. (Paraphrasing.)

Which makes sense to me, but perhaps the opendesktop.org people should work on 
standardizing the two systems' methods of storing this info.
