There a number of databases available both opensource and commercial.  I
personally would recommend postgresql.  There is also mysql available
which is equivalent.  You can also get oracle if you want a commercial
offering with support.  There is also the old Berkely DB package
available.  Which one you select is really dependent on the application
you want to use it for.
