I tried to explain: because without brackets it does try the MX host and
does not directly use the given smart host address. Something seems not
really correct at your side.

Especially when I see that you are running

Red Hat Linux release 6.0 (Hedwig)
Kernel 2.2.5-15 on an i586

with "214-This is Sendmail version 8.9.3"

Is this a honeypot system? :(
I very highly suggest that you immediately upgrade your system!
