pc cards don't work on FC 2.6.5 on my Inspiron

I have only a basic amount of knowledge about linux, but
was hoping (as I should never) for an easy install of at
least the most basic components I needed to work. Several
years ago, I got RH7 (and then 8) to work on my thinkpad,
all except sound and modem, but was happy with that.

Now I got everything to work, except an internet
connection! I have tried 2 different pc cards:
3com 3CCFE574BT (it's 5V 16bit) FC picked the driver
3c574_cs

Xircom realport REM56G-100 ethernet+modem (5V 16bit) FC
picked the driver xirc_2ps_cs
I also tried xircom_cb just in case
(the xircom is the one I would rather have working but
would settle for the 3com)

Neither of these works. I get the error:
device eth<0,1,2> does not seem to be present
(0,1,2 for each of the driver configs above)

I've been looking around the internet for ways to fix or at
least diagnose this. I did a lspci -v and it shows for
related devices:
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX

Nothing else in that message says [disabled]. (I had to
write that out by hand b/c ...well I have no connection and
no floppy drive)

I don't know if this would also help but here is
/proc/interrupts:
0: 4063175 XT-PIC timer
1: 959 XT-PIC i8042
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade

14: 29558 XT-PIC ide0
15: 42727 XT-PIC ide1

>From the lspci message, it seems like maybe the problem is
with the pci bridge and if that worked, everything else
would? Or is it really that I just don't have the correct
drivers for either card?

Finally, one last note, I did a custom install because I do
have particular packages I want installed that aren't
standard (like latex), and some things, like ftp server,
but not samba or other kinds of servers. I hope any
choices I made during the install of packages didn't make a
difference here.

Any insight is enormously appreciated.

Marisa
