Regarding that, you might wanna check out MultiTail
http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/categories.php?func=gd_show_app&gd_app_id=52

Its a gDesklets sensor/display that shows various logfiles in a
transparent window on top the background image.

I find it very handy.
