That is evil! Never use the MySQL root user for normal database works!

From dovecot-example.conf in the current dovecot 0.99.11 source tarball
the syntax seems to be correct. Does the file permissions match?

What does the mysql log say? What does the dovecot log say? Logs are
always the starting point, besides reading the documentation.
