...and that, of course, is my mistake. Using:
  mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-2.6.8.1-Win4Lin.img 2.6.8.1-Win4Lin
works perfectly, of course.

I can't believe I didn't spot that until now; it's a bit embarrassing.
Well, it *is* my first time doing this...
