if you do 'alias' you will see the line
      alias ls='ls --color=tty'
Thus ls is aliased to include the colors.

If you never want the colors, just remove that alias from your startup
scripts.
If instead you want to occasionally not have the colors then use \ls to
execute the non-aliased version of ls.
