Thanks for the reply, there are no other LC type variables set,
and in emacs: C-h v locale-coding-system gives:
locale-coding-system's value is utf-8
as you might expect from the LANG value.

I'm going to be AFK for a few days unfortunately, so thanks in
advance to anyone who makes a suggestion: I want to get this to
work and I will get round to reading any more replies.
