Simple hardware firewalls with multiple network ports and WIFI have
gotten inexpensive.

I highly recommend them.

You do have to keep up to date on firmware.
Some have had 'interesting' bugs.... so be aware.

One critical point is that they provide a double layer of protection.
And to me most importantly they protect you while you are installing
software on a new system.  There is a window of time after an install
and prior to configuration and updates (Linux, WindowZ, Solaris, Irix,
....)  where strange things can happen.

Firewall or not, do set up your system as if it was bare on the net!

This is very important with wireless and also traveling hardware
(laptops).  You want your friends  to be able to connect locally
but their box might be virus infected.  You want to be able to
connect at the coffee house or a friends house..... etc.
