As I understand it, the position of the Red Hat engineers who build
Fedora is this: if someone can show a real-world performance improvement
with i586 or i686 compiled binaries, then they will build an i586 or an
i686 version. In the absence of any evidence that compiling for specific
processors will help, they'll just do an i386 build.

This means that if you can show a real performance benefit merely by
changing the target processor, the Fedora team will be very interested.
Please bugzilla it as an enhancement request for Samba.

On the other hand, the fact that there *isn't* a pre-built i686 version
of Samba implies that you probably won't get much benefit out of
recompiling...

How many clients do you have for that Samba box? Normally, something
like a Samba box will be mainly limited by network speed, disk speed,
and how fast the box can shove data between CPU, memory, network and
disk. I'd be surprised if you got much improvement from changing the
target processor.
