>From your description I wonder if /home is actually mounted.  Maybe the
contents of /home are in the /home directory of the / filesystem and
thus a 12+gb partition is full.

Try logging in as root and unmounting /home (if it is mounted) then do a
"du -ks /home" to see if data is actually there and taking up space but
hidden.
