How to upgarde versions through apt/yum - possible ?

What makes you think this? You could not be further from the truth.

Well, yes it's safer, because it avoids tripping a couple of packaging
bugs apt/yum etc. occasionally trip, but that doesn't mean apt/yum etc.
upgrades are impossible or difficult.
