System locks up with SMP kernel, but not regular kernel... smp used to work fine.

Well, I'll have to agree with you there. I know that a HT P4 is no
match for a dual CPU system. I guess I was just surprised that it
seemed to work fine in the past with the smp kernels, but all of a
sudden it failed. I don't have a whole lot of load on this system, so
I doubt that I will notice much difference by not using the smp
version.

I do recall having problems with using nVidia cards, so the card I am
using now is an ATI card. I have not had any problems at all with this
card through all the kernels up until now. When I was having problems
with my nVidia card, I couldn't even get to the logon screen, so that
card was in the system for all of about an hour until I swapped it out
and started using my ATI card.
