no www after yum update

more details.  pinging my router i get 100% success. 
pinging say www.insertwhateversiteyouwant.com i get:

ping:  unknown host www.insertwhateversiteyouwant.com

i can't traceroute anysite, because my laptop thinks
they dont' exist.  this would appear to be a dns
problem, but WHY??
