Gunzip unknown suffix -- ignored

is gzip the same as winzip?  specifically, can a tarball be compressed with gzip and then unpacked with winzip from windows?

ie, lotsa .txt and .html files in directory foo

tar -czf foo.zip /home/thufir/foo/
