Basically, you need to send the modem commands from the "Hayes command
set" (aka the AT commands).  To configure these in your modem control
application (you mention kppp, I don't know how this is configured
since I've never used it), you'll provide the relavent commands in the
"modem initialization string" setting.

I'd recommend not muting the modem entirely.  If you do so, connection
issues can be more difficult to troubleshoot.  I'd recommend instead
lowering the modem volume but allowing it to continue playing the
dialing and connection sounds.
