How do I make firefox do java?

I'm using an FC3 box.
If I point firefox at an applet, it tells me to
download a plugin.
Following the link is not helpful.
Reading old fedora list messages caused me to
download and try to install jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm .
rpm told me that package jre-1.5.0_01-fcs is already
installed, but I can find no other evidence of it.
Presumably, I'm looking in the wrong place or for the wrong thing.
locate jre had produced
/home/hennebry/tars/netpbm-10.18.17/converter/ppm/ppmtompeg/jrevdct.c
/usr/share/texmf/ptex/platex/base/jreport.cls
/usr/share/texmf/ptex/platex/base/jreport.sty
/usr/share/latex2html/styles/jreport.perl
/usr/share/doc/docbook-style-xsl-1.65.1/docsrc/xsl2jref.xsl
/usr/share/doc/docbook-style-xsl-1.65.1/docsrc/jrefhtml.xsl
/usr/share/doc/docbook-style-xsl-1.65.1/doc/jrefhtml.xsl

ls /usr/java produced
ls: /usr/java: No such file or directory

What am I supposed to do to use java and firefox?
Perhaps more importantly,
how was I supposed to be able to find out?
