Ok, the st module is loaded. I have tried unloading and reloading it- nthis works fine. However, /dev/st0 is not created.

After reboot, I have to create /dev/st0 manually again since it was not created during the boot process. Now created it, the backup using tar is running fine.
But why did /dev/st0 not get created.

dmesg shows (extract):

...
SCSI subsystem initialized
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:02:07.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 169
scsi0 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.36

st0: try direct i/o: yes (alignment 512 B), max page reachable by HBA 1048575
...
st0: Block limits 1 - 16777215 bytes.

And lsmod shows:

...
st 42593 2
...
aic7xxx 161141 1
scsi_transport_spi 23105 1 aic7xxx
sd_mod 22721 0
scsi_mod 135561 4 st,aic7xxx,scsi_transport_spi,sd_mod

Any ideas why the node is not being created?

Many thanks.
