Having to log in is the default; before upgrading you must have 
configured autologin yourself.

See the AutomaticLoginEnable and AutomaticLogin keywords (documented at 
http://yippi.hypermall.com/gdm/gdm-documentation/x241.html) in 
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf to set it up again.
