Avoid it by using the --one-file-system option, whether you are
copying with cp, rsync, or tar.  That will also keep you from
wandering into mounted CDs, DVDs, NFS mounts, etc.  Just be sure
you do each filesystem you want.  Note that you generally do want
to copy /dev and it won't be on a separate filesystem.
