Do you have done this:
add to /HOME/.bash_profile:
    JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre
    export JAVA_HOME

    export PATH

And after this, in order to install the plugin java for Firefox, be root 
(su+password) and create a link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in your mozilla 
plugin folder. The commande is somethinks like this:
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so 
/usr/lib/mozilla1.8..../plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
