I had some problems with the ip2200 driver as well, it turned out that 
the installed firmware
version was too old for the 1.0.6 driver.  To fix it I downloaded the 
latest version from
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php and unpacked it into 
/lib/firmware.
Perhaps you have some similar problem. Unfortunately I can't check what 
kernel/driver/firmware
versions I used, as the laptop I installed it on have been stolen.
