Hi Paul;

Had the same problem with my sound and understanding any info that was
available.

I eventually got rid of the scratchy background.

The problem seems to be caused by the IEC958 being on. Many people have
turned it off through gnome or kde volume controls and still got the
sound. Seems to be a bug. What does seem to work for many is by
turning it off in alsamixer:

Try running alsamixer <RET> on the command line;
Your terminal will fill with a coloured bargraph;
Right key about 12 bars to the IEC958 bar and type M for mute (not 0);
Some people have turned every other bar off by hand for good measure;
Dont' forget to turn the Master etc. back on -- but keep it to a minimum
number to start with; finish with a Ctrl-c. Try your sound now.

Other than that there is
Summary: distorted sound with es1371

After that it gets complicated.
