I found the following info and it worked for me:

The workaround is to force the right sampling rate in /etc/esd.conf :
I had:
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
Now I have:
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -r 44
This sets the sampling rate to 44kHz.
