The built-in modem on my curent laptop doesn't work either. But i have a 
PCMCIA modem from 3 years ago, which works: IBM Modem FRU: 02K4249. 
Perhaps you could try looking for something like that. It even says it's 
cellular-capable, but i haven't tried that aspect of it.
