cannot start the session due to some internal error

"cannot start the session due to some internal error"

Any who can help, please help
I get this error message, anytime I start in runlevel
5 and try to log into gnome (gdm).
I am able to gdm from command line and log into gnome
in runlevel 3; but I can't in runlevel 5.
