basic operations

There are several acceptable places, and many more that aren't quite so.

/usr/local/bin or /usr/local/<productid> would be acceptable. Many products install in /opt/<productid>. I have teams installing to /apps/<productid>. The bottom line is that there is no single magic place.

Some things install to /usr/bin, but this could make applying maintenance an issue.

You should also note that c:\Program files is also just a convention. Many Windows products don't go anywhere near that path, choosing to create their own. Most (many?) Windows products also ask you where you want them to install, so things could drift away from the Program files directory this way as well.

Hope this helps.

Subject: basic operations

To whom it may concern,

Ive recently left the dark and moved into linux, i just have this one query
for now:
In windows all programs were installed into a folder called 'Program Files',
in linux, where is that equivelant folder? What is it called?

I know that this question is fairly trivial, is there anywhere else i can go
to find out basic information such as this?

I greatly appreciate the help.
