cannot find canonical DNS on slmodem PPP connection

I never used wvdial, so I have no reliable information about how it sets
up the dial-in device. The old RHL9 documentation

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/s1-networkscripts-interfaces.html

tells us "The PPP interface configuration file [me: ifcfg-ppp<X> (where
<X> is a unique number corresponding to a specific interface)] is
created automatically when wvdial, the Network Administration Tool or
Kppp is used to create a dialup account.

More googleing tells me, that indeed wvdial makes use of an
ifcfg-<device> configuration file.
