what version of fedora is this?

some things that will help diagnose the problem:

assuming you only have 1 network card, what does the following give
you (as root)
   ifup eth0

can you post the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
? (if you have 2 network cards, the ifcfg-eth1 will be needed too)

do you get the same error if you do
   ifup lo
