One option I have been looking at for music files is the netgear MP101:

This streams music files from a media server on your home network, which 
needs to be UPNP capable. One open source option for that is gmediaserver:

http://www.nongnu.org/gmediaserver/

Once you get into streaming video however, there are many more options. 
It all depends on what media you want to stream.
