connexant modem

hi list
i am trying to install a moden that us according to lspci
02:09.0 Communication controller: Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax Modem (rev 08)
it has been detected but not working. what to do with it.
another thing is that like in Windows one quries modem to get its status. is 
there any such utility in Linux to query the modem
