[FC4] Lost my "/var" directory ! ... help

Suddenly FC4 cannot create (or find) my /var directory at boot time.
I don't know why I lost it and how.

Since I do not have a log file ( should be in /var/log ... which I do 
not have ... ).
I have not a clue how to proceed.
I cannot create a /var directory by hand (as root ) The system says 
there is already a ./var directory ( ?? ) ...which I don't see .
.... any ideas ??
HELP

note, that I can login, but any since my /var/lock and other /var/...  
are - of course - also missing ... nothing works properly
