SMTP AUTH failing

I'm going crazy trying to get SMTP AUTH to work.

The problem seems to be in the relationship between sendmail and saslauthd

Here's relevant stuff from maillog. The last two lines seem to be the key.
I've been Googling for an hour; I see lots of people with the same problem,
but no solutions.

When I use testsaslauthd with my ID and password, it reports OK.

How do I put a secret in the database?
