Yeah, in the end I managed to work that out and im doing the install now..
The screen is still not repainting properly though - so I've got a bad
feeling its still going to be screwed..... Guess I'll know in 10 mins or so

You said that your installation was complete. You are describing a boot from
the installation CD. If that's the case then there is no "a"
required. Just add nofb to the boot option in install (it's one of the
screens).
